Driver Training In Warrington

STARTER

First Lesson, or a Taster Lesson

Your First Lesson

We take advanced bookings, which can be secured with a small deposit.

At Kerry's Driver Training, our aim is to get you driving on your first lesson.

Your friendly instructor will collect you from your chosen location. They will then check your provisional licence, and carry out a quick eyesite check. This involves reading a number plate from approximately 20.5 metres away. Depending on where you live, they will drive you to a quiet area. It is important to start your lessons in an area away from busy traffic, to help to build your confidence and to keep you safe. On the way, your instructor will give you a commentary drive, taking you through what they are doing. This will include things like mirror checks and changing gears.

Next, your instructor will ask you some questions to try and establish any previous experience you may have. You might not have driven before, but you may have learnt some of the basics from being in cars with friends and family. You may have already used the roads on a motorbike or moped for example.

We then get started on teaching you the cockpit drill, (setting up the seat, mirrors and steering wheel). We're all different sizes, and you need to be comfortable when your driving.

When your sitting comfortably, we'll move onto the controls. Each car is different, so you'll be shown the controls of the car you'll be using for your lessons. The controls include things like, the pedals, gears, and lighs.

When you know where everything is and how to work it, we move on to the best bit, moving off and stopping. Your instructor will talk you through moving off and stopping the car. This will be carried out a number of times, so you get plenty of practise.

Depending on experience, it may then be possible to move on to making left turns.

Everybody learns at a different rate, so all lessons are tailored to individual needs. At the end of your lesson, your instructor will offer feedback, and book you in for your next lesson.

A Taster Lesson

A taster lesson is usually for people who have driven before but may have had a bad experience with another company. You will have the opportunity to meet your friendly instructor, and familiarise yourself with the car. Your instructor will assess your driving ability and can discuss how many lessons you may need before you're ready to take your test. This is an opportunity to try us for a one off lesson to make sure we are what you're looking for.

THE PRACTICAL TEST

Everything You Need To Know About The Day

Your instructor will make sure you arrive in plenty of time for the start of your test.

The practical driving test lasts for about 40 minutes.

Before you start your driving part of the test, the examiner will check you licence and will ask you to do an eyesight check. You'll have to read a number plate from a distance of:
20 metres for vehicles with a new style number plate
20.5 metres for vehicles with an old style number plate

You will then be asked a "show me, tell me" question. You'll be asked a second "show me, tell me" question, for example, can you show me how to wash the windscreen, while your driving.

For about 20 minutes of the test, you'll drive independently. Most people will be asked to follow directions using a sat nav, provided by the examiner. One in every five tests won't use a sat nav, but will be asked to follow traffic signs instead.

You'll be asked to pull over and pull away during your test.

You'll also be asked to complete one of the following manoeuvres:
  • Parallel park at the side of the road.
  • Pull up on the right had side of the road, and reverse for approximately two car lengths.
  • Park in a parking bay, either by driving in and reversing out, or reversing in and driving out.

You may also be asked to carry out an emergency stop.

You'll be asked if you want to take your instructor with you on your test, or anybody who is over the age of 16. If you're nervous, taking somebody with you can help to calm your nerves.
It's also helpful to have your instructor with you, as they can help you to work on any problems that arise with your driving during the test.
